In case you missed literally every celebrity, news organization, social media influencer and politician in America, our next election is as important as it is complicated. In a recent study conducted by Pew Research Center, 49% of voters believe it will be difficult to cast a ballot this November. So we as people, businesses and responsible citizens of a (hopefully) functioning democracy need to do everything in our power to help get out the vote.

Moreover, this is an opportunity for your company to shape the ecosystems you want to live in. Whether it’s social justice, healthcare, immigration reform, environmental issues, or economic policies, they all impact your company and the employees who have helped build your business. When you champion these causes or empower your employees to, you raise brand awareness, drive employee engagement, and even drive change with elected officials.

In 2018 companies helped to generate one of the largest voter turnouts in this century by focusing their attention to the cause and this November, we need to exceed those numbers so we can all drive change.

To help you get started, we’ve put together this quick and dirty list of ideas on how your company can help support voter rights for the futures of your employees and communities. It’s not too late to do your part.

Getting Ready for the Big Day:

  • Compile and send voter registration information to your employees to make it as easy as possible for them to sign up
  • Compile resources for employees for volunteer opportunities such as canvassing, phone banking, or registration drives
  • Host voter registration and absentee ballot drives at high traffic areas
  • Donate your ad spend or existing inventory to voting rights organizations
  • Utilize your social media and create content to educate your audience
  • Provide resources on how to vote
  • Breakdown issues on the ballot
  • Recruit influential members of your organization including executives and influencers to talk about the importance of voting

Voting Day:

  • Use your office space, retail space, warehouse space or any space you have as a polling place.
  • Give your employees the day off to vote.
  • Give your employees the day off to volunteer (either the day of or before to help with registration or canvassing). This year voting polls will need more staff on hand to oversee social distancing protocols.
  • If you have a fleet of vehicles, use them to provide transportation for voting for those who need it.
  • Donate supplies for voting places. The pandemic is still a thing which means safety supplies such as PPEs and hand sanitizer are in demand, along with the usual supplies — water, snacks, etc.

The takeaway: Your company can and should take actions to help your employees vote and to make voting more accessible to everyone — period.
